Franz Schubert was born in Himmelpfortgrund, Austria in 1797. He wrote 600 lieder (songs), nine symphonies, operas, liturgical music, solo chamber music and music for solo piano. Interest in Schubert's music has increased greatly over the decades. He is now considered one of the greatest composers in the Western musical tradition.
