Students will work in pairs for a cooperative learning lesson that provides drill and practice for note names in the treble or bass clef.
This lesson is designed to fulfill the 2014 National Standard for Music:
Read and identify rhythmic patterns and melodic notes using iconic or standard notation. (Creating - MU:Cr2.1)

Step 1
Introduce or review the note names on the whiteboard for the clef you've chosen for today's activity (Treble or Bass Clef).
Step 2
Tell students, "The challenge today is to come up with as many words as you can using only the letters of the musical alphabet: A, B, C, D, E, F, and G. You can repeat letters as much as you like! Once you’ve written your words in the blanks below the staff, you’ll turn them into a secret code by drawing the music notes on the staff above each word."
"You have until five minutes before the end of class to create your list. Every word must be spelled out in music notes to count toward your total. The pair with the most words wins a prize!"
Step 3
Ask students to find a partner and a spot in the room to complete the worksheet.
Step 4
Have one member from each team collect the worksheets, pencils, and clipboards.
Step 5
Set the timer and let the brainstorming begin! Remind students often that the words only count if the notation on the staff is correct.
Step 6
Circulate through the room to help teams brainstorm words and to check their notation accuracy. This is a great time to provide mini-lessons on reading skills.
Step 7
Call time and ask everyone to put their pencils down.
Step 8
Check the totals! Ask, "Raise your hand if you finished 5 words... 10 words... 15 words?"
Step 9
Verify the work of the top teams and reward the winners with their prize!
