History for 'Little Poll Parrot'

Little Poll Parrot, like Little Jack Horner and Little Miss Muffet, is an example of a nursery rhyme with six dactylic lines. A dactyl is the basic repeating rhythmic unit that is usually two, three, or four syllables in length. Little Poll Parrot is a Mother Goose nursery rhyme that is believed to have originated in the seventeenth century. The earliest known printing was in a 1840s collection by James Orchard Halliwell.
