We Gather Together
from the MMF! Songbook
History
We Gather Together is a Christian hymn from the Netherlands written by Adrianus Valerius in 1597 celebrating the Dutch victory over Spanish military forces in the Battle of Turnhout. In the United States this traditional hymn it is associated with Thanksgiving Day.
While the hymn first appeared in a Dutch hymnal printed in 1626, after the Pilgrims had sailed to Massachusetts, it is likely that they knew about the hymn during the time that they lived in Holland. The modern English translation was written in 1894 by Theodore Baker.
"...in order that He might also gather together into one the children of God who are scattered abroad." John 11:52 NASB
Lyrics
We gather together to ask the Lord's blessing;
He chastens and hastens His will to make known.
The wicked oppressing now cease from distressing.
Sing praises to His Name; He forgets not His own.
Beside us to guide us, our God with us joining,
Ordaining, maintaining His kingdom divine;
So from the beginning the fight we were winning;
Thou, Lord, were at our side, all glory be Thine!
We all do extol Thee, Thou Leader triumphant,
And pray that Thou still our Defender will be.
Let Thy congregation escape tribulation;
Thy Name be ever praised! O Lord, make us free!
