Humpty Dumpty
from the MMF! Songbook

History
In Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, Humpty Dumpty was an egg who met his tragic demise when he fell from a wall. The original Humpty Dumpty, was however, a large cannon used during the English Civil War (1642 - 1649) during the Siege of Colchester. The town of Colchester was a walled city with a castle and several churches. Standing right next to the city wall, was St Mary's Church. Placed on the wall of St. Mary's Church was a huge cannon named Humpty Dumpty. Humpy Dumpty's tradgic fall resulted from a shot from a Parliamentary cannon which damaged the wall beneath the cannon. The Royalists, or Cavaliers, tried to raise Humpty Dumpty up again, and place it on another part of the wall. However, because the cannon was so heavy they were unable to raise it. As a result, the town of Colchester fell to the Parliamentarians.

Lyrics
Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall.
All the King's horses, And all the King's men
Couldn't put Humpty together again!

Alternative Lyrics
Humpty dumpty sat on a wall,
Humpty dumpty had a great fall;
Threescore men and threescore more,
Could not place Humpty as he was before.
